SCAM ALERT: Beware of Donation Pick-Up Imposters

Thursday, June 07, 2018

Twenty-five years ago, Goodwill Houston made the decision to no longer provide donation pick-up services. To make donating as easy and convenient as possible, we now have more than 100 locations across the Greater Houston area where you can drop-off your gently used clothing and household items – and help create job opportunities in our local community. (Find your nearest Donation Center)

We recently learned that there are organizations promoting themselves as being affiliated with Goodwill and claiming to pick up donations on our behalf. As valued supporters of Goodwill, we want to help you avoid becoming a victim of a donation pick-up scam. Here are some tips we hope you will follow:

  • Don’t believe everything you read. Just because it’s on the internet doesn’t make it true. Anyone can publish anything on the Internet.
  • Do your research. Make sure the organization is legitimate and reputable BEFORE engaging with them – especially if they are asking for a cash donation or a fee. Checking with the Houston Better Business Bureau (BBB) is always a good place to start.
  • Never give out personal information to or open an account with anyone unless you are confident that you are dealing with an organization you know and can trust.
