President's Message
This has been an incredible year for Goodwill Houston, one made all the more remarkable because we've achieved so much in a challenging economic environment. As I look back on our 2009 accomplishments, I notice some impressive numbers:
- More than 8,000 people impacted by Goodwill Houston's programs and services
- 14 new attended donation centers
- seven new Goodwill Select Stores
- six workforce development grants, totaling about $1.5 million
- five new members to our Business Advisory Council
- four new members to our Board of Trustees (Mike Caswell, Coleman Rowland, Robin Sims and Brian Franklin)
- four new members to our Board of Directors (Craig Nunez, Tony Pilegge, Sandra Scott and James Morris)
- three successful fundraising events (our Goodwill Gala in March, our Moreton Achievement Awards Luncheon in August and our Goodwill Golf Classic in October)
In 2010, we plan to open nine more stores. You might be asking, how are we able to expand during a tough economy? The short answer is, with caution and with a lot of research. National donation formulas based on resident demographics are used before lease agreements are signed. A strong donation base and an ever-increasing regional population continue to create the market for more stores and the need for more job opportunities and employment services.
All of this growth means more jobs and training for people in Greater Houston. Each time a new Goodwill Select store opens, we create 25 new jobs in our community. At a time when many Houston-area retailers are laying off employees, Goodwill Houston is looking to hire qualified candidates. While Goodwill Houston’s programs and services provide training and job opportunities for people with disabilities and other barriers to employment, we hire people of all abilities to work at our locations. From our recently opened stores to new locations on the horizon, we need friendly, talented workers to support them.
We're proud to be changing lives through the power of work. As always, I'm interested in your comments about items featured on our site as well as your ideas for our future. Just send an e-mail to steve@goodwillhouston.org. I look forward to receiving your feedback. As always, thank you for the many ways you contribute to our mission. Together let's create a terrific 2010!
Sincerely,
Steven P. Lufburrow |
